19. There are no buyer's fees in our sales.

20. All overseas packages will be shipped via registered or express mail at buyer's risk.

21. Bidders not known to us must provide us with satisfactory credit references or pay a deposit as determined by the auctioneer.

24. The minimum acceptable bid on any lot is at least 60% of the estimate. In some cases a reserve may be higher than that, but it will never be higher than the estimate. We have made every effort to make the estimates realistic and conservative. In addition no bids on coins and medals of precious metals will be accepted that are below the melt value of the item. For our mailbid purposes we are defining precious metals as being of silver, gold, platinum or palladium.

BIDDING IN OUR MAILBID SALE   (back to top)

We will stop taking bids at 9:00 PM on November 10th or when our phone and/or Fax stops ringing for 10 minutes. Please do not wait until the last minute and get shut out. In every sale a number of bidders could not get through on the last night.

We suggest you bid above estimate if you want an item as high bids will be reduced. Our bid sheets offer several bidding options that can save you money, optimize your bids and see that you get the lots that you really want. If you are unsure of how to use these options, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to explain them to you.

Please keep in mind that in some cases there may be unpublished reserves set either by the consignor or the cataloger and no bids of less than 60% of estimate are considered. We do not have a call back service, but after placing your bid you may contact us as many times as you like to check on your bids. And we take seriously the commitment to reduce bids. We do not reveal the high bid of any lot, but if you have placed a bid on a lot, you may contact us after your bid has been placed and we will tell you if you are the high bidder.

Usually well over 1/3 of all successful bids are reduced and over 75% of successful bidders have at least one of their winning bids reduced. We believe that the best strategy to being a successful bidder is placing your bids early and not waiting until the last minute. We suggest placing your bids early and then, if you want, you may check on your bids near the end of the sale.

Please keep in mind that we can not guarantee who is the last bidder. If someone calls us at 9 PM, the sale will continue for at least 10 minutes after that call is completed. If someone else calls us during that 10 minutes, the sale continues for another 10 minutes. And so on.

NO BUYER'S FEE    (back to top)

We do not charge a buyer's fees in our sales. You are charged only for the amount of your winning bid, postage and shipping charges.

LOT VIEWING SCHEDULE   (back to top)

Denver Coin Expo. November 3-6, National Western Complex, "Expo Hall", I-70 and Brighton Blvd., Denver CO. Thursday November 3rd is dealer set up day. Public hours are Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 3 PM. We will have most lots in the sale available for viewing at our bourse tables during all show hours. There are some bulk lots which we will bring only if specifically asked to. Please call us prior to the show to ensure that we bring the lots you want to see.

We plan to have the majority of the material in the sale in our office Monday through Friday except for the show dates mentioned above, until the close of the sale if you need more detailed description of any of the lots. However, please contact us as well in advance of the close of the sale as possible in order that we can provide you with as much information as possible. We will be happy to return your call if we cannot provide you with the information you require when you call, fax or email.

We will confirm all email bids received within 24 hours of receiving the bid. If you do not receive a confirmation please contact us. We have been deluged by spam as I'm sure many of you have also. Even though our filter separates most of the junk from the "real" mail, it does not do a perfect job, thus we ask that when sending us a bid or inquiring about the sale, please put "Bid" or "Mailbid Sale" in the subject line so we do not delete your email along with the junk we receive every day. We do not confirm mail or fax bids unless specifically asked to do so.

No information will be available about the results of the sale until all bids have been checked and invoices written. This should take about 4 days. We will not be answering the phone until that information is ready. We hope to be ready by Monday November 14th or Tuesday November 15th.

HIGHLIGHTS OF SALE 35D   (back to top)

No doubt the highlight of the sale are seven very rare Israel patterns, proofs and specimens which we believe came from the ICI mint archives in Birmingham, England. There are 3 different 1949 25 Pruta Specimen coins in 3 different metals! The so-called "common" one has a mintage of perhaps 20, that is in Copper-Nickel. We know of only one other 25 Pruta Specimen in aluminum, a piece we sold about 30 years ago for $5000 and a 25 Pruta in Bronze was not known until this piece surfaced this past summer. In addition in the paper money section is a trial drawing of the 25 Pruta Specimen (and an unknown 10 Pruta Specimen) from Otto Wallisch, the designer of the coins, as well as the Israel carpet notes.

Two 1949 Proofs are also being offered. 5 and 10 Pruta Proofs are known from this year, although very scarce. However those that we have seen have only exhibited some characteristics of true proof coins. The two coins we offer are full true proofs and by far the nicest we have seen. Concluding this amazing group of coins are two different 1960 Eight Grain 1 Agora Patterns. The ICI mint had been awarded the contract to strike these coins and sent a number of different samples to the Bank of Israel. All these types (4 different) had eight grains of barley on the left ear of the 3 ears on the obverse of the coin. For some reason the BOI committee wanted 10 ears. Thus we are left with what is known as "Israel's classic rarity" 4 known types, but only 10 pieces total. We're proud to offer 2 different types in this sale.

We are offering Part One of the George Fisher collection of Biblical and other Ancient Coins. Many of you read our short biography of George in our spring catalog as he died just before that catalog went to press. A few sentences will have to make up for the 3 or 4 paragraphs I wrote for that catalog. George graduated from high school in 1944 in Fairfield, Connecticut and immediately joined the Army where he eventually became proficient in Japanese and worked in breaking their codes during WWII and performed the same service in Chinese during the Korean War. With this background he became one of the worlds' leading experts in non-machine made Chinese coins. He shared his knowledge in this field with everybody who asked, as well as being an author, an instructor and a long time volunteer at the ANA Money Museum.

George was the ultimate collector, he wanted to know everything about the items he bought. And in most cases he put this information on the holder in which he stored his coin. In his neat and meticulous handwriting George would usually put down the issuing country, the date, the ruler, the size, the weight, the description of the obverse and reverse, the legend, the translation of the legend, the transliteration of the legend, catalog numbers, who he bought the coin from, when he bought the coin and the grade that the dealer assigned to the coin. Not every coin had all this information, but the great majority did. About the only thing George did not put down was his cost. Actually he probably did put down the cost, but we have yet to be able to break down his series of ancient Chinese lettering which we presume was his cost code.

Over 275 lots in this sale are from the George Fisher collection and in almost all cases we have included his holder with the lot. A picture of a typical "George" holder is on the inside front cover. It should be noted that in some cases what was most important to George was the reverse of the coin and in those cases the "reverse" identified the coin which may have been more important to George than the Roman emperor who issued the coin. George's Biblical collection was very strong in "City Coins", Judaea Capta coins and Crusader coinage although he had coins from all areas this field, plus other ancient coins, mainly from places that he had visited. In addition George collected Barbed Wire coins, medals and tokens and we are offering a large number of them here.

Since we did not always mention which lots were from the George Fisher collection in the catalog we will do so here. Please keep in mind that in most cases we can advise you of who George bought the coin from and when he did. 1, 2, 5, 9-16, 18, 21-26, 29-31, 34, 36, 38-43, 45, 47, 50-74, 77-78, 81-95, 98, 101-104, 106, 108-114, 116-122, 124-159, 161-164, 168-205, 207-229, 231-238, 240-245, 247-250, 255, 259, 261-266, 271-274, 294, 296, 298, 300-304, 306, 308, 310, 312, 342-345, 347-353, 365-366, 387-388, 405-411, 551-555, 1005, 1006, 1009, 1012, 1014, 1018-1019, 1031, 1044-1047, 1083, 1091, 1103, 1112, 1115, 1116, 1125 and 1126. Probably 95% of his coins are in his special holders, a few he never put much on them (mostly modern) and most of the coins he bought in his last 6 months he didn't work up either. As Rita told me when she was photographing his coins, "I'm learning so much from reading George's holders".

While we feel that each and every lot is special and deserves more mention, obviously time and space does not permit that. However special mention of items from Bill Spenlger's collection must be noted. Bill is another true collector and researcher who after a long career in the foreign service retired to Colorado Springs in the mid-1970's and devoted his time and energy to the study of numismatics (and probably every antique store within 25 miles of the entire length of I-70 as well). Bill and George were good friends and taught numerous courses together at the ANA Summer Seminar. Ironically Bill has been gallantly fighting the same disease, pancreatic cancer, that George died from.

Bill is one of the world's leading experts of Indian, Afghani, Pakistan and other South and Western Asian coins. Many of those coins are being offered by others. However we offering many items from his collections of British Coronation medals, Crystal Palace Medals, British India medals as well as paper money from Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Maldives and Spitzbergen. In many cases we can also relay who he bought the item from, when, where and how much. Others will be offered in future lists and catalogs.

We have only mentioned three of the major consignments for this sale. We have some space left, so we'll mention a few more highlights along with this tidbit. We have so much more that should have gone into this catalog, but our deadline is fast approaching. Actually our deadline has passed, but our "absolute, final, last call" deadline is still a few hours away.

A large collection of Swiss Talers and Crowns from Denver is included in this sale. Virtually every canton and most of the "coin" Shooting Talers are included with this collection which was formed in the 1950's through the early 1970's.

The Paper Money section has a small but select group of Palestine bank notes including a high grade 1927 500 Mils and the finest 10 Pound 1944 note we have ever offered. The Israel paper section has the aforementioned "coin" specimen drawings as well as six other extremely rare trials and Proofs. In addition an incredible run of Specimens and Color Trials from numerous countries around the globe are available.

A small consignment of high grade notes and 2 ancient coins comes to us from the widow of an old customer of ours. Actually we use the term old to indicate that he had been buying material from us since just about when we started in business 35 years ago. He was only his 50's when he passed away last year after a long and valiant fight against a disease that put him in a wheel chair for the last years of his life. We miss our friend Marc greatly and feel honored to be offering part of his collection.

If you have any questions about any of the lots, please don't hesitate to ask us.
